Our Latest Production
The Haunting of Hill House

Welcome

There is a long tradition of successful amateur dramatics at Budleigh Salterton. Since the group was founded in 1938, it has gone from strength to strength, finally acquiring its own theatre - the Salterton Playhouse - in 1970. The Playhouse is a large wooden building set next to the stream in Meadow Lane, and offers raked seating and full facilities for approximately 80 patrons.

Although the Club is relatively small, levels of enthusiasm and commitment are very high indeed. As a result, we are currently able to stage four plays a year, with each production running for six performances - Monday to Friday evening and a Saturday matinee.

Dear members and friends of the Salterton Drama Club,

Well, what an interesting week it had been! The Coronavirus is testing our nation in ways we would never have anticipated during peacetime.

At the Salterton Drama Club we have had to cancel our June production, and the One Act Play Festival which we were due to participate in tomorrow was also cancelled. Having spoken to Geoff Paver at the Lions Club, we have also been informed that Gala Week and therefore our ‘Saturday Night Gameshow Bonanza’ has also been cancelled. Consequently, all rehearsals, set building and social events have also been postponed until further notice.

Although this saddens us all greatly, it is with peace of mind that this is ultimately the safest and best decision for the welfare of both our members and our audience.

For many of you, as with myself, the Playhouse is a place of immense fun, and is where the heart of our socialising lies. You may be wondering what you will do to pass the time without it. I know I certainly am! As most of you are aware, I keep myself more than a little busy with projects and ideas for the club – so by the time we come back you might find that I’m exploding with new ideas!

I’ve been trying to figure out how it would be possible for us all to continue to ‘get together’ whilst maintaining social distancing measures. With this in mind I’m working on the idea of a remote play reading, where we can all join via video call (initiated by myself with full instructions), or for those of you without a computer, by dialling in, in a similar manner to a conference call.
I have a number of scripts for various plays at home and I could scan them in and email these to everyone, and post copies to those not online. Or alternatively we could find some new scripts with digital copies and do the same. Those who don’t want to read could also just dial in for a chat and catch up.

If this would be of interest to you, please let me know and I will organise some dates.
We could also do a weekly call just to all chat together if people like the idea.

I know that some of our members will already be taking measures to self-isolate at this time. If you need any help at all, be it fetching shopping or walking the dog, please do not hesitate to let me know and I will do what I can to assist.

Likewise, if anyone is struggling, feeling lonely at all, or has simply started to go stir crazy from too much TV or reading, then please give me a call and I would love to have a catch up with you.

Please ensure that you all follow the government guidelines at this difficult time. The quicker we all adhere to them, the quicker everything will return to normal. I hope you all stay safe and well, and I look forward to returning to the Playhouse with you soon.

With love and best wishes,

Penny Hill

We are sure that this post will come as no surprise to you but our June production has been cancelled until further notice.

With this in mind all rehearsals and set building have also ceased at this time.

We hope all of our members, audience and friends stay safe and look forward to entertaining you all again soon.

Stay tuned!
