Hound of the Baskervilles

3rd. December - 8th. December 2018

About The Play

Written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle

Adapted by Tim Kelly

Directed by Penny Hill

Salterton Drama club presents Sherlock Holmes’ most spine-chilling mystery – with suspense, humor, and terror.
Sir Henry is heir to the vast Baskerville fortune, a legacy that comes with a family curse: death at the fangs of a horror that prowls the moor. Only Holmes can stop the beast. While mysterious lights signal Baskerville Hall and the hound terrifies the countryside, the sleuthing begins and suspicion falls on sinister servants, butterfly collectors, ladies in distress, and escaped convicts. Who wrote the letter that summoned the hound? Is Sir Henry’s romance with the lovely Kathy doomed? Is the supernatural at work?

Director's Notes

Me again! This time with my Director’s hat on.

It’s 2 years since I last directed ‘The Flint Street Nativity’, so for my next production I decided to go with the complete opposite end of the spectrum – Sherlock Holmes’ spine chilling tale of ‘The Hound of the Baskervilles’.

You will notice that there are many new faces on our stage, as well as some you know well. Some of the cast have years of experience and some are just starting on their journeys on the stage. All have done incredibly well and I’m proud of you all. The cast have worked hard at their character development and I hope you see that come across as we build up the tension in this famous story.

The script – adapted by Tim Kelly – was originally set in modern times but gave the option of back dating to the original Victorian period. I decided the style and atmosphere would be far more effective in its original Victorian design, and the set team really have done me proud as I’m sure you will agree.

Hopefully we will still have some surprises for you even though this is a well-known story.

I hope you enjoy the show as I have enjoyed directing it. If you do, please head over to our Facebook page or google and leave us a review – it helps us immeasurably.

Thank you to everyone who has helped bring this production together, I really couldn’t have done it without you.

Chairman's Notes

Welcome back to the Salterton Drama Club!

How this year has flown again! As we sit here for our final production of 2018 I think of all that we have achieved again this year. 3 fantastic productions, winning the Exmouth One Act Play Festival, another successful Murder Mystery, and of course our lottery funding!

We have also just been successfully accepted on to the Co-Op Local Community Fund! So please make sure you do all of your shopping at Budleigh Salterton Co-Op and choose the Salterton Drama Club for donating your membership points!

You may have noticed the snazzy new look of the Playhouse as you came in. We think it looks cleaner, fresher and more modern and we hope you agree.

As ever works and fundraising continues at the club. We were excited to be invited to apply for a special ‘People’s Project’ competition following our lottery award. Alas we did not make it through to the next stages, but the application gave way for some fascinating insights from our members.

I asked for people’s experiences of the club and was overwhelmed and extremely proud at the comments that came back. The Salterton Drama Club has helped people through grief, depression, loneliness as well as helping to build people’s confidence, help them with their careers and express their creativity. The Salterton Drama Club is not just about putting on 4 plays a year, it is a family and an amazing group of people, ready to welcome anyone with open arms.

If you are on Facebook, please follow our page as you will get lots of updates about what we are getting up to, and you can also see the video we put together for the ‘People’s Projects’.

If you are interested, we would love for you to join our membership list – forms are in the foyer or talk to any of our front of house staff – and become part of our family.

But for now – have a very Merry Christmas, a Happy New Year, and enjoy the thrill of the legend of the Baskervilles and a very famous detective.
